what a watch tells us -- 5/31/24

Today's selection -- from A Man and His Watch by Matt Hranek. The watch style of Nas:

“When I was around seventeen years old, living in Queens, I knew a guy who had a gold Rolex Presidential. Even before I saw it, I heard lots of people talking about it. I had never seen something like that up close before. He was my first friend who had an all-gold Rolex, and something about the seriousness of it made him more of a man, you know? I've noticed through the years that many important men wore a gold Rolex just like it—Sammy Davis Jr. and Martin Luther King Jr., to name a couple.

“My father never wore watches the way I wear them. No one in my family wore the type of watches I like. It just came to me; I have my own taste, a way of styling things that appeals to me.

“I like to wear things that people don't know about. When you notice a man with a watch that you've only seen in a magazine, or heard about, there's something unique about the guy wearing it. If you see a guy with a lot of diamonds on his watch, the way I see it—the way I've experienced it with other people, and even myself— you know that guy likes to have a lot of fun. He's looking to have a good time.

“My current favorite is a Patek Philippe Nautilus. I like the name, and I like that it's not a watch that everyone is wearing. I don't have large wrists, and the proportions and the shape fit. It's comfortable. There are no diamonds, it's rose gold, there's a leather band—it goes with everything. It works if I just want to sit with my everyday look, but if I go somewhere that requires a suit, it'll stand strong, too.

“It doesn't matter what's happening in the digital world; you like what you like. The picture quality of old movies isn't great, but they're still classics, and I won't stop watching them just because movies today are high-definition. The first Jordan sneakers didn't have ankle support like the sneakers that came after them, but I bought them when they first came out, and I buy them today. Certain things are with me forever.

“They say time is an illusion, but even so, you need it. A good watch represents someone who's punctual, responsible, who has a lot on his plate. Someone who knows how to manage his time and takes life seriously, because life doesn't wait for anybody. Before you know it, you're running out of time.”
