one million spotify streams --1/23/26
Today's selection-- from 60 Minute Record Executive Kristian Moyo. A million Spotify streams pays out roughly $3,500 gross on average. That's before deductions of well over half of that amount paid to the artist’s manager, distributor, and label:
“It's never been easier to upload music. It's also never been harder to get paid from it. Every 24 hours, over 120,000 new tracks are dumped onto Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. Most will generate under 1,000 plays. Every generation of artists is told the same story: if you're talented enough, hustle hard enough, or go viral at the right moment, you'll break through. Labels reinforce it, platforms monetize it, and the culture eats it up because it sells hope. The myth of meritocracy is the engine that keeps millions of artists uploading, posting, and praying that this is their shot.
“But strip away the story and what you have left is math. The industry isn't a dream machine—it's a calculator. And when you run the numbers, they tell a story.
“Spotify alone has 11 + million artists on its platform. Fewer than 150,000 make more than $10,000 annually in streaming royalties. That's roughly 1.2%. If you filter out legacy acts, catalogue rights-holders, and multi-credited producers, the number of independent artists making a livable income is closer to 0.01%—one in ten thousand.
“That means the industry is less a ladder you climb and more a lottery you play. The vast majority lose, and a tiny minority hit jackpots big enough to cover the system's costs. It's not an accident. It's design.
“First principle: success in music is not about odds-it's about leverage. And if you don't own leverage, you're just another line item on someone else's balance sheet.
“The Illusion of Streams

“On the surface, streaming looks like salvation. Gone are the days of physical distribution choke points, retail monopolies, or regional scarcity. Today, you can upload a track on Monday, go viral on TikTok Tuesday, hit 2 million streams by Friday, and get an email from a label scout by Sunday. It feels like empowerment.
“But zoom in and the illusion unravels. A million Spotify streams pays out ~$3,500 gross on average. That's before deductions: 20% to your manager, 15% to your distributor,
50-80% to your label if you signed a traditional deal, plus whatever recoupables the label fronted for your video, PR, or tour bus.
“That ‘million-stream moment’ often nets less than a barista's paycheck. And geography matters: a stream in the U.S. can be worth $0.004, while a stream in India or Brazil may be closer to $0.001. The rise of global listening skews payouts even further toward volume-driven superstars while starving niche independents.
“Case study: In 2022, Bad Bunny was Spotify's most-streamed artist globally, with over 18.5 billion streams. His dominance was powered largely by Latin American listeners—markets with lower subscription prices and lower per-stream payouts. Bunny offset this by selling out stadiums and driving brand partnerships, but imagine if his career relied on streaming alone. Even the biggest artist in the world would be underpaid relative to cultural impact.
“Streaming isn't income—it's awareness. And mistaking one for the other is why so many artists end up broke with impressive digital stats.
“First principle: streams are not a business model. They're a marketing channel.”
